THE LATEST RETAIL INDUSTRY NEWS
The BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor figures for December show sales up 6.9% - over a 2.1% increase in 2021 – with 2022 overall showing non-food recording a 3.2% uplift for the year.
UK fashion and beauty spend trailed inflation in December
Barclays figures for total consumer card spend grew 4.4% in December with spending on non-essential items up 4.1% - the biggest increase since July - however, clothing spend rose just 1.5%
Online retail sales see negative growth in 2022
The IMRG Online Retail Index saw UK online sales fall 12% in Dec, and fall 10.5% in 2022, the first time it has fallen since records began. However clothing bucked the trend with 2.5% growth in 2022.
Amazon plans to shut three UK warehouses
Amazon plans to shut three UK warehouses in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster and Gourock impacting 1,200 jobs, but is to build two fulfilment centres creating 2,500 jobs over two years
Sosandar boosted by record Christmas trading
Sosandar had a record quarter up to January 1st with revenue increasing by 30% to £11.6m, its fifth consecutive quarter of profitability, with an average order value of £106.37 up 11% on 2021.
The Fragrance Shop hails record-breaking Christmas performance
The Fragrance Shop saw an 11.2% uplift in underlying sales in the six weeks to January, thanks to investments in its omnichannel strategy and opening 12 new stores to bring its total to 216.
Card Factory ups profit guidance
Card Factory had a strong Christmas and said that sales for the 11 months to Dec 31 climbed to £432.6m and now expects annual profits to come in ahead of guidance.
AO World raises full-year profit guidance
Despite a 17.2% sales decrease in the last quarter AO World UK has raised its full-year guidance for adjusted EBITDA to be £30-40m for the year to March up from £20-30m
Brunello Cucinelli hails an excellent year
Brunello Cucinelli had a record-breaking year in 2022 with sales up 29.1% to €919.5m, with sales in the Americas rising by 40.5%, Europe 20.8%, and Asia 28.1%.
Urban Outfitters sales up 2.3% over November and December
Urban Outfitters sales were up 2.3% for the two months ended Dec 31 with sales for the last 11 months up 5.1% compared to the same period last year driven equally by online and in-store.
Belstaff narrows losses as sales bounce back
Belstaff turnover for the year to 31 Dec 2021 was up 16.6% to £50.2m, and reduced its operating loss from £20.4m to £4.5m.
Lululemon forecasts a decline in Christmas gross margins
Lululemon said it expects gross margin to decline in Q4, however, it also raised net revenue forecast to between $2.66-2.7bn, from its previous range of $2.61-$2.66bn.
Castore increases borrowing facility to £75m to aid further strategic growth
Castore has increased the size of its borrowing facility from £50m to £75m with its existing lenders to help liquidity and the group’s growth ambitions.
Abercrombie & Fitch updates Q4 outlook
Abercrombie & Fitch said it expects Q4 sales to be better than expected with a 1-2% increase rather than a 2-4% decrease and now expects full-year sales to be down just 1% not down 2-3%.

Plus, as we’re mid-winter there will still be searches for anything cosy, so pyjamas, slippers, coats, hygge, winter warmers, knitwear, scarves and everything warm.
